Family is the ruin we inherit, the ruin we accept, the ruin that forever lives within us.
Departing from a multigenerational family home in Brestanica, Slovenia, a city occupied by the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Nazi Germany. The work takes the domestic space as a site of political archaeology where objects, writings, and photographs collected from the house become the raw material for five collages, printed on metal.
The work sits at the intersection of Nazism and neoliberalism that both instrumentalise the family as a political technology.
Nothing in the architecture of the home is accidental. The house holds the sediment of every ruling ideology that passed through it. To go against the family is to abolish the structure of the family. There is no loyalty when it comes to family just as there is no loyalty when it comes to the state.
