The Spit

Inspired by Peter Weibel’s work called SPIT PAINTINGS Better than Warhol, Koons, Hirst a project was created using Augmented reality in order to connect between the digital and physical and commemorate Peter Weibel’s legacy as an artist, new media theorist, and professor at University of Applied Arts Vienna.

The project titled The Spit  preserves the layered, 2D logic of Weibel’s work while moving ideas into spatial experience.

The Postsparkasse building that has two roofs, one original and one constructed later, allows for reinterpretation by imitating the camera, glass and spit layers as it is structured in the original work.

AR experience includes an unsettling sound composed of fragments from Weibel’s original work, additionally recorded spits and dripping water. These elements evoke disgust and intensity while the audience is almost attacked by the spits regularly coming from the mouths.

The original work seems to emphasise how commercialisation and commodification of arts challenges conventions of artistic production, creativity and resistance. By using spit as a method the whole painting translates into the most human bodily form possible. It suggests that everyone should afford to do and look at art, as long as they are alive.

Work was presented at Angewandte Festival 2025 and Thinking Through Weibel exhibition in 2026 in Vienna.
