compress, dissolve, remain
The work is inspired by Jonathan Sterne's MP3: The Meaning of a Format and his argument that the MP3 is not only a technical file format but an important historical and cultural object. Intrigued by the idea of compression as targeted loss of data based on human senses the work translates this logic into image and the eye. The chain of compression becomes visible in the process itself. Aluminium foil is being scrunched and flattened, photographed, and at the end reduced further into the layered, separated process of riso printing. The work tries to visualise the chain of compression as a set of embedded choices about what is kept and what drifts away.
Work was exhibited as part of the exhibition and auction Nexus at Huidenclub, Rotterdam in April 2026.
